Ulster Barbarians -

We held this tournament in Antrim Forum Leisure Complex last September, bringing in competition from the Irish Development team, Caledonian Crushers and DMP Bulls.  Our patron and ex-Ulster, Ireland and British & Irish Lions international Trevor Ringland gathered a team of ex-rugby union players to take on our volunteers during the lunch break on the first day of the tournament.

The teams played a round robin on Saturday 21st September before placement matches on the Sunday.  The scores on the Saturday were as follows:

Team 1ScoreTeam 2
Ulster Barbarians30 – 52Caledonian Crushers
Ulster Barbarians36 – 49Irish Development
Caledonian Crushers34 – 54DMP Bulls
Ringland’s Rugby Riot8 – 11Visceral Volunteers
Ulster Barbarians44 – 45DMP Bulls
Irish Development46 – 41Caledonian Crushers
Irish Development15 – 21DMP Bulls

Placements following the Sunday contests were as follows:

  1. DMP Bulls
  2. Irish Development
  3. Ulster Barbarians
  4. Caledonian Crushers

We struggled against the experience of the Irish Development team and the Crushers, each of whom have their share of international experience.  The Bulls had solid gameplay which we were able to break through to a certain extent, but which took them ahead of Irish Development to the top of the table.  We managed to narrowly defeat the C

rushers in a tight scramble for 3rd place.

Massive thanks to the Antrim Forum staff, to all the teams and their volunteers, to referees and officials, as well as to our own volunteers for helping us to host a great first tournament – a milestone.  And further thanks to Chris Dowling for capturing the attached video from the day.
