Laois Lions vs Ulster Barbarians
Ulster Barbarians 51 - Laois Lions 44
Cork - 23.09.2017
The Barbarians started with Dave, Gail, Paul and Sean. The Lions team was Jonny, Ger, Skinny, James, Jack and Noel. The first quarter was very close. Initially the Barbarians went 3-0 up, but a slight loss of concentration allowed the Lions back in. The Lions ended the quarter slightly ahead at 14-13. It continued to be score for score up to half time as the teams went in at 25-25. A competitive game played in excellent spirit.
The third quarter continued to be very intense with end to end action. The Barbarians gave up a few points on the restarts, but Paul and Sean were working hard and blocking well on the Lions restarts. This resulted in a number of turnovers. Q3, 36-41 in favour of the Barbarians.
It was all to play for in the final quarter. Dave was occasionally falling foul of the referee due to his enthusiasm to disrupt the Lions possession, and was in the bin on at least three occasions during the game. However the Barbarians finished the stronger of the two teams for the Barbarians to record their first victory of this season. Final score 51-44.
Round two of the Irish League was a great success. All the matches were very competitive, and played in a great spirit. Many thanks to all involved in the organisation, particularly the desk operators and officials, and those involved in putting on the copious lunch. A particular mention for Nigel who along with his wife Debbie flew over from Southampton to help with the refereeing. He was also able to give some very helpful referee coaching to Dell and Hugo.
Later on a number of the Ulster Barbarians were joined at the Hotel for dinner and other refreshments by some of our hosts and Jonny. A very pleasant, and for some a late night was had.
We all look forward to hosting everyone in the Aurora Bangor, and afterwards in Belfast on Saturday 21st of October.
